What To Do When Your Computer won't turn on or boot

If you've attempted to turn on your computer, but are being met with a blank screen, there are a number of reasons that your computer won't boot. This tutorial will walk you through how to check your RAM, your motherboard and your PCI cards.

Fix a Computer That Won't Boot

N.B. Before making any attempt to remove or replace pieces of your computer, ensure that your device is turned off.

Check Your Computer's RAM

If your computer is in good working condition, the most likely cause of these issue is your memory card (RAM). Try removing and replacing your current memory card.

If placing your memory card in another card slot does not work, it is likely the problem lies with the memory card, itself. You will need to replace it.

Check the Condition of Your Motherboard

Verify that your motherboard is still in good working condition. You can do this by removing your memory card, and then powering on your PC.

Upon rebooting your computer, you should be met with continuous beeping sounds. If so, your motherboard is not the cause of your booting issues.

Check Your PCI Cards

If your RAM and motherboard seem to be working properly, it is possible that your problem is being caused by faulty PCI (Peripheral Component Interconnect) cards.

Remove your current PCI cards, and then power on your computer.

Check Your Processor

If your computer is turning on, it is very unlikely that your processor is faulty. However, if you would still like to check to make sure your processor is OK, you should remove the CPU cooler fan, and then power on your PC.

Place your finger on your computer's processor for 2 seconds. You should find the processor heating up. Turn your computer off immediately.

If this process works, your processor is in good condition.

N.B. Remember not to leave your computer on for more than 5 secs

How To Connect two Computers via a USB Cable

Connecting two computers with a USB cable. Posted by Aina Paul 06 December 2015

One of the simplest ways to connect two PCs is through a hardware USB cable, so you can cable transfers files between two PCs - it's a network which is formed to share connections. There are various USB-USB cables for sale. Choose the "bridged" one, also known as the "USB networking cable", which has an electronic circuit at the center for interconnection between two PCs. The other cable, known as A/A USB, has two standard USB connectors at each end, without a bridge chip that makes it useless to connect two PCs. As a matter of caution, it can burn the USB ports and the power supplies connected with the A/A cable. A/B USB cables connects only printers and scanners . For a high-speed use, a USB 2.0 cable has a better transfer rate than a standard network connection, so it's usually preferred.
If you have to transfer large files from one PC to another, using a flash disk or burning a CD-ROM can seem like a waste of time. One wise way to transfer these files quickly between two computers would be to use a USB-USB cable.
What to choose?
To be able to make the transfer, you will need: 1. An Ethernet crossover cable
2. A null modem serial cable. If you don't have one, you can use a parallel peripheral cable.
3. And finally special-purpose USB cables.
How does it work?
The Ethernet network will allow you to transfer data between more than two PCs. One of the computers must have an Ethernet adapter, even if the others have a USB port as you can make use of the crossover cable. You can do this by plugging a USB-to-Ethernet converter device in the other computers that possess a USB port.
The cable that you should use to connect two PCs together is called a "USB networking cable". A tiny electronic circuit is used in the middle of the connection to allow the two PC to send data to one another. You should bear in mind that if you are using serial or parallel cables, you will not be able to transfer data between more than two computers. It is therefore recommended you use a Direct Cable Connection to be able to get the same specifications as an Ethernet cable.

You can make use of a USB 1.1 or USB 2.0 bridge chip to enhance the speed of your transfer. You must also bear in mind that you need an Ethernet network that works at 100 Mps or more to ease your transfers.
What to do?

    1. Both computers should be switched on and logged in into the "Administrator" account.
    2. On the USB port computer, plug in the USB bridge to the USB slot and the end bridge in the other computer.
    3. You must now install the USB bridge cable driver software when you are asked to. Remember to install it as a link adapter or a network adapter.
    4. If you choose to install a link adapter, you will be allowed to transfer files from one PC to another but if you choose to install a network adapter, you will be able to access the whole network's PCs.
    5. When installation is complete, you should be able to start the data transfers between the computers connected

* And finally could cause total system failure

To avoid the above consequences, get a good antivirus program for your laptop.

Note: Though Antivirus program is essential for your system safety, you should not install more than one antivirus program on your system at the same time.

2. Lifting Your Laptop By The Screen
One common mistake people often make is; lifting their laptops by the screen, therefore exerting too much pressure on the laptop hinges, and increasing the risk of losing your laptop screen. Always grab your laptop by the base and not by the screen.

3. Blocking The Air Vent
Blocking the air vents helps the system cool by serving as a means for the system to dissipate heat. If you block these vents by placing a pile of papers that block the vents for example, your laptop would overheat causing problems that could make you lose your laptop to damage.

Always ensure that you don’t block your laptop vent to prevent overheating and damage to your laptop. The air vents on your laptop.

4. Using Your Laptop Without Surge Protection

The truth however is, no matter how small you perceive the problem to be, if you are not a technician or have concrete knowledge about your computer hardware, do no open your computer, doing so could stand you the risk of tempering with other things which could spoil your laptop totally. Always seek technical help when having issues with your computer, don’t do try and error.

10 Tips To Improve Your System Speed 95% Faster

10 Tips To Improve Your System Speed – 95% Faster [Must See]

Many of us think that when a computer starts performing poorly that it’s time to buy a new computer. Does your desktop or laptop often hang on the hour glass for several minutes at a time?

Always take the Follow Precautions below:-

1. Let your PC boot up completely before opening any applications.

2.Refresh the desktop after closing any application. This will remove any unused files from the RAM.

3. Do not set very large file size images as your wallpaper. Do not keep a wallpaper at all if your PC is low on RAM (less than 64 MB).

4. Do not clutter your Desktop with a lot of shortcuts. Each shortcut on the desktop uses up to 500 bytes of RAM

5. Empty the recycle bin regularly. The files are not really deleted from your hard drive until you empty the recycle bin.

6. Delete the temporary internet files regularly.

7. Defragment your hard drive once every two months. This will free up a lot of space on your hard drive and rearrange the files so that your applications run faster. To defragment your hard drive go to my computer icon on the desktop and right click it then go to manage options, there you will see “Disk defragmenter”. Click it then analyze and defrag your drives. You can also defrag your drives using third party software like AVG PC tools,Disk Defragmenter etc.

8. Always make two partitions in your hard drive. Install all large Softwares (like PSP, Photoshop, 3DS Max etc) in the second partition. Windows uses all the available empty space in C drive as virtual memory when your Computer RAM is full. Keep the C Drive as empty as possible.

9. When installing new Softwares disable the option of having a tray icon. The tray icons use up available RAM, and also slow down the booting of your PC. Also disable the option of starting the application automatically when the PC boots. You can disable these options later on also from the Tools or preferences menu in your application.

10. Protect your PC from dust. Dust causes the CPU cooling fan to jam and slow down thereby gradually heating your CPU and affecting the processing speed. Use compressed air to blow out any dust from the CPU. Never use vacuum.

Extra Tip:- Keep your Desktop Screen as Clean as Possible, Deleted Unwanted Software and Keep Only Need Icon on your Desktop.

Tech: Charge Your Smartphone By Shouting At It

UNBELIEVABLE:- Charge Your Smartphone By Shouting At It – See How It Works

Charge your phone by SHOUTING at it: Gadget converts sound waves from speech into five volts of energy for your mobile.
As the class Governor of my department at Yaba college Of technology, It seems phone batteries always die at the same moment you need to make an important call like calling a Lecturer , before class or after class.
But while shouting at your mobile in frustration might seem pointless, a new gadget could soon mean your screams won’t be in vain.
Researchers in London have created a new technology that uses sound, such as chants at a football ground or chatter in a coffee shop, to charge up mobile phones.
Their prototype device, which is about the size of a mobile phone, uses zinc oxide to convert vibrations caused by sound into electricity.
The invention was inspired by previous research at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL), which found playing pop and rock music improved the performance of solar cells.
This was because the sound vibrations triggered the movement of material in the solar cell that caused it to improve efficiency by up to 40 per cent.
Developing this research further, Nokia worked with the QMUL team to create an energy-harvesting prototype that could be used to charge a mobile phone using everyday background noise.
Nokia worked with the QMUL team to create an energy-harvesting prototype that could be used to charge a mobile phone using everyday background noise. Pictured here is the zinc oxide used in the device.
The team used the key properties of zinc oxide, a material that when squashed or stretched creates a voltage by converting energy from motion into electrical energy, in the form of nanorods.
The nanorods can be coated onto various surfaces in different locations making the energy harvesting versatile.
When this surface is squashed or stretched, the nanorods then generate a high voltage.
The nanorods respond to vibration and movement created by everyday sound, such as our voices.
Electrical contacts on both sides of the rods are then used to harvest the voltage to charge a phone.
In order to make it possible to produce these nanogenerators at scale, the scientists found innovative ways to cut costs in the production process.
Firstly, they developed a process whereby they could spray on the nanorod chemicals – almost like nanorod graffiti – to cover a plastic sheet in a layer of zinc oxide.
When put into a mixture of chemicals and heated to just 90°C, the nanorods grew all over the surface of the sheet.
Secondly, gold is traditionally used as an electrical contact, but the team were able to produce a method of using cheap and cheerful aluminium foil instead.
The final device is the same size as a Nokia Lumia 925 and generates five volts, which is enough to charge a phone.
‘Being able to keep mobile devices working for longer, or do away with batteries completely by tapping into the stray energy that is all around us is an exciting concept,’ said Dr Joe Briscoe from QMUL

Reason Why Your Smartphone Gets Hot

Tech: Reason Why Your Smartphone Gets Hot
All smartphones warm up a little during intense use. This is quite normal and nothing to be alarmed about. During intensive use, the phone draws a lot of power from the battery and this causes it to warm up.

What is abnormal is where your phone heats up tremendously and becomes hot. Sometimes, the only thing to fear is a burning sensation when in contact with your body. In worse cases, the phone may shut down, become unresponsive or reboot.

In the worst case scenario, the device may combust – burst into flames.

Also, note that heat drains the battery of your phone faster. The hotter it gets, the faster your battery drains, so you get the most out of your battery if you keep your phone from heating up too much.

What To Do If Your Phone Gets Hot During Use

1. Put it down a while and let it cool down.

2. Turn off WiFi or 3G/4G data. Internet usage are key power drainers in any smartphone. By disabling your internet connection, you cut off this factor, and of course mostly likely will put down your phone :-)

3. Don’t use your phone in extremely hot conditions e.g near ovens, in direct, scorching sunlight.

4. Turn off battery draining apps. Those are usually apps that run in the background and using your internet connection. These may include Map apps, email apps, and ocial networking apps.

5. Sometimes, the problem is a rogue app – a badly written app – running in the background. Find it. Kill it. Uninstall it. Do not be merciful.

top 10 things to consider when buying a new laptop

When people ask us which laptop is best for their needs, the first thing we tell them is that there is no clear answer. There are too many types of laptops and price ranges to suit those different types of laptops. However, we do give people a checklist that they should consider before splurging on a new device.
1. Size: If portability is your main concern, then you need to consider a notebook that has a small-ish screen and a light weight. Any laptop marketed as an Ultrabook should fit your bill here, as they are designed to be slim and light. More to the point, though, look for a laptop with a screen that’s 12.5-13.3 inches in size, and a weight that is from 1-1.5kg.
2. Screen quality: You’ll be staring at your laptop for many hours every day, so you want to make sure you get a screen that is comfortable to look at. Many laptops these days also have touchscreens, which means they are glossy. Glossy screens lead to reflections, so consider a laptop that doesn’t have a touchscreen.
Next, look at the resolution. A 1920x1080-pixel resolution (aka Full HD) should be considered if you want plenty of space to line up windows and keep things in view. Finally, the viewing angles are extremely important. A laptop screen that touts IPS (in-plane switching) technology offers the widest viewing angles and the best user comfort.
Try not to buy blind. If possible, go into a store and see the screen for yourself. Otherwise, rely on multiple reviews to get a good overview of the product.
3. Keyboard quality: For long typing sessions, you must get a laptop that has a comfortable keyboard. You don’t want to get a keyboard that packs in every key under the sun (think keyboards that have squished in number pads) because that can translate to a poor overall user experience when hunting for keys like the arrows.
You want a keyboard that has a comfortable layout with full-sized keys and some space around the arrow keys. The keys should have adequate travel on the downstroke and snappy responsiveness when you let them go. Make sure the keyboard is also backlit, so that you can type with an easier view on the keys in dimly lit environments.
As with the screen, it helps to try before you buy, especially if your main task will be typing.
4. CPU: It’s hard to go past any of Intel’s Core-based CPUs when buying a new laptop. Think Core i3, Core i5, and Core i7. These CPUs offer the best performance when it comes to multitasking and multimedia tasks. Core i3-based notebooks are generally found in entry-level systems, while Core i5 makes up the majority of mainstream computers.
Core i7-based systems are for those of you who want the best performance from your laptop. However, note that with a Core i7-based system, heat coming through the base of the laptop can be cause for concern, especially if you plan to actually use the laptop on your lap a lot of the time.
5. RAM: You need 4GB of RAM or more to get the best out of your system. More RAM allows for more applications to be run at the same time, and for more data to be quickly accessible by the system at any one time, which comes in handy for tasks such as editing photos.
6. Storage: Hard drives used to be all the rage, but these days they are mostly out favour, especially for thin and light laptops. This is because they can be slow, somewhat bulky, and produce noticeable heat and noise. A solid state drive (SSD), on the other hand, offers a lot more speed than a hard drive, runs silently, and can be installed in a form factor that doesn’t add too much to the weight and bulk of a laptop.
The only problem is that SSDs don’t offer as much capacity. You’ll be stuck with a drive that’s either 128GB or 256GB in size, and even then, laptops with 256GB SSDs are pretty expensive. Stick to a 128GB SSD for your new laptop, though, and you’ll love the speed with which it can load programs, access your data, and also how quickly it can boot up your system (it takes under 7 seconds for some Windows 8 systems).
7. Battery life: Manufacturer-quoted battery life is often not indicative of what a laptop can do, and this is based on the many variables that affect battery life. These are the screen brightness, the screen resolution, and the tasks that you run. If you run programs that need lots of processing, or if you stream lots of online video, or if you transfer lots of files over your wireless network, then your battery will drain a lot sooner than what the vendor has quoted.
Look at the rating of the battery in Watt-hours (Wh) or milliamp-hours (mAh). The larger these figures are, the longer the battery can last. For a 13.3in Ultrabook, for example, a battery with a rating from 44Wh to 50Wh will give you the best results.
8. Wireless networking and Bluetooth: This is something that can be often overlooked when buying a laptop, but considering that most laptops rely on an Internet connection for the majority of their tasks, it’s an extremely important feature. At the very least, you need a laptop that has a dual-band Wi-Fi adapter. This will allow you to use the laptop with a dual-band router’s 5GHz network, allowing it to work quicker and perhaps segregating it from other devices on your network that use the 2.4GHz network.
For those of you who want the fastest networking, get a laptop with an 802.11ac wireless adapter (some laptops come with an Intel Wireless-AC 7260), which can work with the latest range of 802.11ac routers that have hit the market recently. Using 802.11ac, your file transfer rates will be able to hit speeds over 30 megabytes per second (MBps), and in some cases even approach 40MBs. This is beneficial when you want to transfer video files to your laptop before going on a trip, for example.
Also look for Bluetooth 4.0. Bluetooth isn’t only handy for connecting to wireless mice and keyboards, it’s also awesome for connecting to a Hi-Fi system wirelessly. We use Bluetooth all the time to play music through a stereo system from our laptop. This is music that’s either stored locally or streamed from Google Play Music or online radio stations while we work.
9. Full-sized SD card: Why would you want a full-sized SD card? Well, if you’re a photographer and you quickly want to get photos off the camera and onto your laptop, the SD card slot is the best way to do so. Many modern cameras come with Wi-Fi to facilitate transfers from the camera, but that’s still a fiddly process. Some SD card slots are better than others, too. Look for one in which the card can sit all the way in, rather than a slot that makes the card stick halfway out.
10. USB 3.0: You shouldn’t get a laptop without a USB 3.0 port, and you should look for a laptop that has at least a couple of these ports. This is for obvious reasons such as plugging in an external hard drive to back up your laptop’s data, or for when you want to plug in a conventional mouse or a fancy keyboard.
